Warring factions loyal
to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and Femi
Gbajabiamila, have resolved to sheath their swords and abide by the directive
of their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), conveyed in a letter to Dogara
on June 23.
Rising from a meeting early
Tuesday, the two sides agreed that, though the names nominated by the party
will no longer stand, the adopted formula zoning (House Leader - South West;
Deputy House Leader – North West; Chief Whip – North East; and Deputy House
Whip – South South) will be used in producing the principal officers.
They resolved that zonal
caucuses will conduct elections to produce those to occupy the various
positions based on the zoning formula conveyed in the party’s letter. The zonal
caucus elections are expected between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Yakubu Dogara, Speaker, House of Representatives |
It is widely believed
that Monday’s meeting, at the behest of President Muhammadu Buhari, the Dogara
faction and the APC leadership where it was agreed that the letter from the
party be respected played a key role in the resolution of the lingering crisis.
Femi Gbajaiamila |
Many are of the view
that the agreement has broadened the chances of Gbajabiamila emerging the
majority leader, a key demand that has been at the centre of the nearly
two-month old crisis.
